AI in the Department; Connecticut Passes Sweeping Regulation
by Grant Morgan

Police in Eugene, Oregon, are considering having AI help review body camera footage to check for racist or offensive remarks from officers. The idea surfaced after a controversial incident led to an officer’s resignation in May. Discussions are preliminary, and an existing police-union agreement with the city bars using AI to initiate or investigate misconduct allegations until mid-2027. City officials are also weighing broader rules for surveillance technology after a dispute over license-plate reader cameras last year.

AI Regulation

Connecticut this month enacted one of the country’s broadest AI and online-safety laws. Novel provisions target TikTok-style social media feeds used by minors, with rules planned to take effect in 2028. The law covers several other policy areas, including AI companions, employment-related AI tools, and AI-generated media, and raises new privacy questions around age checks, parental consent, and how platforms identify younger users.

“Minors’ attachment to social media is no accident.”
